Millbrook House in Milton village, Abingdon, ten miles south of Oxford, has been a family run school for over thirty years. Simon Glazebrook, the current Headmaster, and his wife Helen, have been involved in the general running since 1978.
Essentially a coaching preparatory school for the Public School network, offering intensive tuition for the common Entrance exam by experienced staff. Millbrook also has many years experience with children of all nationalities helping them adapt towards the English system before moving on to senior schools.
Boys and girls are accepted between the ages of seven and fourteen. A confidential report from the Headmaster of the child's previous school is required. There is no entrance test, and children of varying academic ability are able to benefit from the teaching programme in a friendly but structured atmosphere.
This includes extra English language tuition from specialist TEFL teachers, as well as guidance for children suffering from a degree of dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.
Children who are more able, receive coaching and guidance in small classes (less than 10) on the core subjects of the Common Entrance curriculum, so that they are well prepared for taking the exam to major Public Schools.
Confidence building is a priority at Millbrook. This is achieved not only in the classroom, where slow learners receive the extra encouragement necessary for their return to mainstream classwork, but also on the sports field, where every child is given the opportunity to take part in the activities on offer. Unlike some schools, where children are forced for participate, Millbrook adopts the approach of encouraging them to do so, placing them in situations where it is possible to gain self-assurance.
Another priority is that of choosing the appropriate Public School. Simon Glazebrook welcomes parental contact in order to keep them informed of the progress achieved and to discuss the choice of senior school which caters for the child's interests and ability, where they will cope with the work with reasonable ease. This is one of the special features at Millbrook.
